Jaylah Ji'mya Hickmon(born August 14, 1998), known professionally asDoechii(/ˈdi/), is an American rapper and singer. After releasing her debut EP,Oh the Places You'll Go(2020), she rose to prominence onTikTokwith the viral success of her 2021 song "Yucky Blucky Fruitcake". She then signed withTop Dawg Entertainmentin a joint venture withCapitol Records,through which she released her second EP,She / Her / Black Bitch(2022). Her 2023 single "What It Is (Block Boy)"(featuringKodak Black) marked her first entry on theBillboardHot 100and receivedplatinumcertification by theRecording Industry Association of America(RIAA).

Doechii was awarded theRising Star AwardfromBillboard Women in Musicin 2023 and has received nominations for twoMTV Video Music Awards,a BET Award and twoSoul Train Music Awards.

Early life

Jaylah Ji'mya Hickmon was born on August 14, 1998, inTampa, Florida,[1]where she was also raised.[2]She has described her upbringing asChristian.[3]She attendedHoward W. Blake High Schoolin Tampa and grew up performing ballet, tap dancing, acting, cheerleading, and gymnastics.

Career

She started writing poetry and rap in high school, and was making music prior to 2014. Doechii released her debut song "Girls" onSoundCloudin 2016 as Iamdoechii.[4]Her project,Coven Music Session, Vol. 1,was released in 2019.[5]

Doechii's debut EP,Oh the Places You'll Go,was self-funded and released in 2020.[2]It was described byRolling Stoneas a mix ofpop,dance,andhip hop.[6]"Yucky Blucky Fruitcake", a single from the EP released in September 2020, was inspired by her readingThe Artist's Wayand went viral onTikTokin 2021, earning her attention from record labels. Also in 2021, she released her second EP,Bra-Less;she was featured onIsaiah Rashad's song "Wat U Sed" from his album,The House Is Burning,which she performed with Rashad at the2021 BET Hip Hop Awards;and was an opening act duringSZA's 2021 tour.[7][8][5]In March 2022, she was signed toCapitol Recordsby Chris Turner (A&R) andTop Dawg Entertainment,making her the first female rapper on the latter label.[9]That same month, she released "Persuasive",her first release through Top Dawg, and appeared as a featured artist onDavid GuettaandAfrojack's song "Trampoline" alongsideMissy ElliottandBia.[10][11][12]

In April 2022, she released the song "Crazy" with a music video.[13][14]Her second EP and her first major label release,She / Her / Black Bitch,was released on August 5, 2022.[15]Her July 2022 performance of her song "Persuasive" was nominated for Push Performance of the Year at the2022 MTV Video Music Awards.[16]

Doechii performed at the22nd Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festivalin April 2023.[17]Also in 2023, Doechii made her acting debut inEarth Mama,a drama film directed bySavanah Leaf.[4]

On August 30, 2024, Doechii released her mixtapeAlligator Bites Never Heal.[18]

Musical style

Rolling Stone's Mankaprr Conteh described Doechii's rap delivery as "animated" and her song narratives as "quirky". Her music has frequently been compared to that ofthe Notorious B.I.G.,Nicki Minaj,Missy Elliott,andAzealia Banks.[9]She has described her music asalternative hip hop,[2]and has cited Minaj andLauryn Hillas her major musical influences,[5]referring to them as "powerful women".[19]

Personal life

Doechii still resides in Tampa, Florida but she lived inNew York City,New York for some time before theCovid-19 pandemic.She moved back to Tampa to quarantine with family. She says this quarantining period of the pandemic served her well because she spent her time reading and growing creatively.[20]She isbisexual.[21] She also publishesYouTubevlogsabout daily life and experiences. Doechii says her female rap inspirations areLauryn Hill,Nicki MinajandMissy Elliott.[22]
