Dono Doni,also known asAdone DoniorDono dei Doni(1505-1575) was an Italian painter of theRenaissanceperiod active mainly inUmbria.

Biography[edit]

Doni was born atAssisi.WhileLanziand others claim he was a disciple ofPietro Perugino,[1]the first we know of Doni was that in 1530 he was an assistant toGiovanni di Pietro(lo Spagna) at San Giacomo inSpoleto.[2]

In the church of San Francesco, at Perugia, is a picture depicting theLast Judgmentby Doni;' and one of theAdoration of the Kingsis inSan Pietroin the same city.

He worked chiefly at Assisi. For the church of San Crispolto ofBettona,he painted anAdoration of the Shepherds(1543), now at the Pinacoteca Civica of the town. For the Ciccoli family chapel at the church of San Francesco inBevagna,he painted aMadonna and Child(ca. 1565), now in the city picture gallery. InFoligno,he painted a fresco depicting theNativity with St Lucy(1544) for the monastery of Sant'Anna; a frieze for the Sala Papale (attributed, ca. 1545) ofPalazzo Trinci;and a fresco depicting theMartyrdom of St Catherine of Alexandriafor the nunnery of Santa Caterina Vecchia, now detached and in the Pinacoteca Civica. InGubbio,he painted aPietà(after 1560) and aRoad to Calvary(ca. 1564) now in theDuomo.[3]He also worked withLattanzio PaganiandCristofano Gherardiat the no longer-extant Rocca Paolina ofPerugia.

In the Lower Church of theFranciscan Convent at Assisithere are Doni frescoes depicting thePreaching and Martyrdom of St Stephen,and in the smallrefectoryis theLast Supper(1573), probably his last work. Doni died at Assisi in 1575.Vasarierrs in stating that he was a nephew ofTaddeo Bartoli.In theBerlin Gallerythere is by him a 'Madonna with the Infant Jesus,' who is represented as reaching after a book which is in the Virgin's hand.
