Anatomical terminology

Theinternal pudendal arteryis one of the threepudendal arteries. It branches off theinternal iliac artery, and provides blood to theexternal genitalia.

Structure[edit]

The internal pudendalarteryis the terminal branch of the anterior trunk of theinternal iliac artery.[1]It is smaller in thefemalethan in themale.

Path[edit]

It arises from the anterior division of internal iliac artery. It runs on the lateral pelvic wall. It exits thepelvic cavitythrough thegreater sciatic foramen, inferior to thepiriformis muscle,to enter thegluteal region.

It then curves around thesacrospinous ligamentto enter theperineumthrough thelesser sciatic foramen.

It travels through thepudendal canalwith theinternal pudendal veinsand thepudendal nerve.

Branches[edit]

The internal pudendal artery gives off the following branches:

In females In males Description
Inferior rectal artery Inferior rectal artery toanal canal
Perineal artery Perineal artery suppliestransversus perinei superficialis muscle
Posterior labial branches Posterior scrotal branches -
Artery of bulb of vestibule Artery of bulb of penis[1] suppliesbulb of vestibule/bulb of penis
Dorsal artery of clitoris Dorsal artery of the penis[1] -
Deep artery of clitoris Deep artery of the penis[1] tocorpus cavernosum penis/clitoridis

Thedeep artery of clitorisis a branch of the internal pudendal artery and supplies theclitoral crura.Another branch of the internal pudendal artery is thedorsal artery of clitoris.

Some sources consider theurethral arterya direct branch of the internal pudendal artery,[2]while others consider it a branch of theperineal artery.[citation needed]

In males, the internal pudendal artery also gives rise to the perforating arteries of the penis.[1]

Variation[edit]

Around 70% of men have an accessory internal pudendal artery.[1]This usually does not originate from the internal iliac artery, instead originating from theexternal iliac artery, theobturator artery,or thevesical arteries.[1]

Function[edit]

The internal pudendal artery supplies blood to theexternal genitalia.

Clinical significance[edit]

In women, the internal pudendal artery may be damaged duringchildbirth.[3]This may cause ahaematoma, which usually resolves without treatment, but may form an infectedabscess.[3]
