Douglas Harold CoppCCFRSFRSC(January 16, 1915 – March 17, 1998) was a Canadian scientist who discovered and named the hormonecalcitonin,which is used in the treatment of bone disease.
Early life and education[edit]
Douglas Harold Copp was born inToronto,Ontario,on January 16, 1915.[1]
He received his MD from theUniversity of Torontoin 1939 and his PhD in biochemistry from theUniversity of California at Berkeleyin 1943.
Career[edit]
In 1950 Copp became the first head of the physiology department in the newly-established Faculty of Medicine at theUniversity of British Columbia.[2]
Recognition, honours and legacy[edit]
- In 1967 he received the Gardner International Award jointly with the British endocrinologistIain Macintyrewho had sequenced calcitonin and showed it originated in the thyroid gland.[3]
- He was elected fellow of theRoyal Society of Canada.
- In 1971 he was elected fellow of both theRoyal Society
- In 1971 he was made an Officer of theOrder of Canadaand was promoted to Companion in 1980.[4]
- In 1972 he was awarded theFlavelle MedalAward of the Royal Society of Canada.[2]
- In 1980 he was madeCompanion of the Order of Canada[5]
- In 1994 he was inducted into theCanadian Medical Hall of Fame.[2]
- In 2000 he was inducted into the Canadian Science and Engineering Hall of Fame.[6]
- From 2001 until 2009, theInternational Bone and Mineral Societyawarded the biennial D. Harold Copp Award, named in honour of Copp.[7]
