Dowgate,also referred to asDowngateandDownegate,[1]is a smallwardin theCity of London,the historic and financial centre ofLondon,England. The ward is bounded to the east by Swan Lane and Laurence Poutney Lane, to the south by theRiver Thames,to the west by Cousin Lane and College Hill, and to the north byCannon Street.It is where the "lost"Walbrookwatercourse emptied into the Thames.

A number of Citylivery companiesare quartered in the ward: theWorshipful Company of Dyers,Worshipful Company of Innholders,Worshipful Company of SkinnersandWorshipful Company of Tallow Chandlers.There is one church,St. Michael Paternoster,[a]where, in addition to its local and congregational causes, theAnglican Mission to Seafarersconvenes and fundraises. The ward also containsCannon Street station,which is on the site of theSteelyard(a mediaeval trading port of theHanseatic League), and Dowgate Fire Station onUpper Thames Street,the onlyLondon Fire Brigadestation within the City of London.[2]

Politics[edit]

Dowgate is one ofthe 25 wardsof theCity of London,each electing analdermanto theCourt of Aldermenand commoners (the City equivalent of acouncillor) to theCourt of Common Councilof theCity of London Corporation.Only electors who areFreemen of the City of Londonare eligible to stand.
