Duke of Cumberlandis apeeragetitle that was conferred upon junior members of theBritish royal family,named after thehistoric countyofCumberland.[1]

History[edit]

TheEarldom of Cumberland,created in 1525, became extinct in 1643. The dukedom was created in thePeerage of Englandin 1644 forPrince Rupert of the Rhine,nephew of KingCharles I.When he died without male heirs, the title was created again in the Peerage of England in 1689 forPrince George of Denmark,husband ofPrincess Anne,younger daughter of KingJames II.He also died without heirs, in 1708. Neither of these men, however, was usually known by his peerage title.

The third creation, in thePeerage of Great Britain,was forPrince William,the third son of KingGeorge II.Other titles granted to Prince William wereMarquess of Berkhampstead,Earl of Kennington,Viscount TrematonandBaron Alderney.Since the Prince died unmarried and without children, his titles became extinct at his death.

The titlesDuke of Cumberland and StrathearnandDuke of Cumberland and Teviotdalewere later created in the Peerage of Great Britain.

Dukes of Cumberland and Strathearn (1766)[edit]

The sole title-holder wasPrince Henry(1745–1790), third son ofFrederick, Prince of Wales.He died without legitimate issue, when the dukedom again became extinct.

Dukes of Cumberland and Teviotdale (1799)[edit]

This double dukedom, in thePeerage of Great Britain,was bestowed on PrinceErnest Augustus(1771–1851) (laterKing of Hanover), the fifth son and eighth child of KingGeorge III of the United KingdomandKing of Hanover.In 1919, it was suspended under theTitles Deprivation Act 1917and, as of 2023,has not been restored to its titular heir.
