Dzhe(Џ џ; italics:Џ џorЏ џ;italics:Џ, џ), also spelleddže,is a letter of theCyrillic scriptused inMacedonianandvarietiesofSerbo-Croatian(MontenegrinandSerbian) to represent thevoiced postalveolar affricate/d͡ʒ/,like the pronunciation of j in “jump”.

Dzhe corresponds in other Cyrillic Alpha bets to thedigraphsдж or чж, or to the lettersChe with descender(Ҷ ҷ),Che with vertical stroke(Ҹ ҹ),Khakassian Che(Ӌ ӌ),Zhe with breve(Ӂ ӂ),Zhe with diaeresis(Ӝ ӝ), orZhje(Җ җ).

In the Latin version ofSerbo-Croatian,it corresponds with the digraphwhich, like the digraphsljandnj,is treated as a single letter, including in crossword puzzles and for purposes ofcollation.

Abkhazuses it to represent thevoiced retroflex affricate/ɖʐ/.The digraph џь is used to represent the/dʒ/sound.

History

The letter Dzhe was first used in the 15th-centuryRomanian Cyrillic Alpha bet,as a modified form of the letter ч.[1]Serbian scribes began using it in the 17th century.[2]Vuk Karadžićincluded it in hisCyrillic scriptreform, when the letter entered widespread use.[1]
