Edgar Richard BurgessFZS(23 September 1891 – 23 April 1952) was an Englishrowerwho competed forGreat Britainin the1912 Summer Olympics.[1]

Burgess was born in London and educated atEton CollegeandMagdalen College, Oxford,where he was a Diploma student in anthropology.[2]He joinedLeander Cluband wasbowmanof the Leandereightwhich won the gold medal for Great Britainrowing at the 1912 Summer Olympics.He was the only member of the crew who had not won a blue rowing in theBoat Race.[3]In 1913, he was bow for the winningOxfordin the Boat Race.

Burgess was a member of theInner Templeand spent many years with the Sudan Political Service. He was a Fellow of theZoological Society.[4]On retirement, he lived in Morocco where he died at his home inTangier.
