Humes was born inPhiladelphiaand attendedHampshire College.[citation needed]

In 1989 he received thePulitzer Prize for specialized reportingfor investigative stories he wrote about theUnited States militaryfor theOrange County Register.[1]

Afterward, he began writing non-fiction books. Humes is the author of 13 nonfiction books, including the bestsellingMississippi Mud;No Matter How Loud I Shout;Baby E.R.;A Man and His Mountain;andGarbology,a popular selection for theFirst Year Experienceprogram on college campuses.[citation needed]

In 2001, Humes spent a year teaching a writing workshop atWhitney High SchoolinCerritos, California,a middle-classLos Angelessuburb. His observations while at the school led to his narrative non-fiction bookSchool of Dreams,published in 2004.[citation needed]

Humes is a contributing writer forSierra Magazine,California LawyerandLos Angeles Magazine,among other publications. He is married to journalist and author Donna Wares and lives in Southern California.[citation needed]
