Edwin Bennett Astwood(December 19, 1909 – February 17, 1976) was aBermudian-Americanphysiologistandendocrinologist:his research onendocrine systemled to treatments forhyperthyroidism,first published in 1943 in what has subsequently been called a "landmark" paper.[1]In 1949 he showed thatmethimazolewas superior to alternative therapies forGraves' diseaseand this became a standard treatment for the condition.[2]

He was elected a Fellow of theAmerican Academy of Arts and Sciencesin 1949.[3]In 1948, he was awarded theCameron Prize for Therapeutics of the University of Edinburgh.He died of cancer on February 17, 1976, inHamilton, Bermuda.[4]
