Ein Yabrud(Arabic:عين يبرود) is aPalestiniantown in theRamallah and al-Bireh Governoratein the centralWest Bank.It is located approximately 7 km northeast of the city ofRamallahand its elevation is 800 m. According to thePalestinian Central Bureau of Statistics(PCBS) the town had a population of 2,515 in 2017.[1]

Location

Ein Yabrud is located (horizontally) 6.8 kilometers (4.2 mi) west ofRamallah.It is bordered byRammunandTaybehto the east,YabrudandSilwadto the north,Dura al-Qar'to the west, andDeir Dibwan,BeitinandAl-Birehto the south.[3]

History

Sherdsfrom theHellenistic,RomanandByzantineeras have been found here.[4]A grave, with threearcosolia,and with coins from the reign ofConstantine the Greathave been excavated here.[5]

Sherds from theUmayyad,Crusader/AyyubidandMamlukeras have also been found.[4]

Yaqutnoted about Ein Yabrud andYabrud:"A village lying north of Jerusalem, on the road from the Holy City toNabulus,between which and Yabrud is Kafar Natha. It possesses orchards and vineyards, and olives andSumachtrees. "[6]

Ottoman era

Ein Yabrud, like the rest ofPalestine,was incorporated into theOttoman Empirein 1517, and in thecensusof 1596, the village was noted in theNahiyaof Quds of theLiwaofQudsunder the name of 'Ayn Ibrud.The population was 24 households, all Muslim. The villagers paid a fixed tax rate of 33.3% on various agricultural products, such as wheat, barley, olive trees, vineyards, fruit trees, goats and/or beehives, in addition to "occasional revenues"; a total of 8,700akçe.[7][8]

In 1838,Edward Robinsonnoted Ein Yabrud "on the top of a hill".[9]It was further noted as Muslim village, located in theBeni Murrahregion, north of Jerusalem.[10]

In 1863Victor Guérinfound it to have 800 inhabitants. He further noted that a number of houses were built with antique materials.[11]

Socinfound from an official Ottoman village list from about 1870 that the village had 66 houses and a population of 282, though the population count only included men. It was further noted that it was located one hour north ofBeitin.[12][13]

In 1882 thePEF'sSurvey of Western Palestine(SWP) described 'Ain Yebrudas: "A village of moderate size on the top of a hill, well built, surrounded with fine groves of olives, with awellon the north-east. "[14]

In 1896 the population of 'Ain jabrudwas estimated to be about 573 persons.[15]

British Mandate era

In the1922 census of Palestine,conducted by theBritish Mandate authorities,the population numbered 576 Muslims,[16]increasing in the1931 censusto 788 inhabitants, in 178 houses.[17]

In the1945 statisticsEin Yabrud had a population of 930 Muslims,[18]and a total land area of 11,488dunams.[19]3,151 dunams were for plantations and irrigable land, 3,632 for cereals,[20]while 88 dunams were built-up areas.[21]

Jordanian era

In the wake of the1948 Arab–Israeli War,and after the1949 Armistice Agreements,Ein Yabrud came underJordanian rule.Jordanconfiscated lands of Ein Yabrud and nearbySilwadfor the construction of a military camp before theSix-Day War.[22]

The Jordanian census of 1961 found 1,501 inhabitants in Ein Yabrud.[23]

Post-1967

Since theSix-Day Warin 1967, Ein Yabrud has been underIsraeli occupation.

After the1995 accords,34.3% of village land is classified asArea Bland, while the remaining 65.7% is classified asArea C.[24]

Israel hasconfiscatedland from Ein Yarbrud for twosettlements:1,252dunamsforOfraand 137 dunams forBeit El.[25]

The Jordanian buildings formed the initial basis of the Israeli settlement of Ofra founded in 1975.[22]Plans for further expansion of Ofra in this land in 2011 resulted in legal challenges and public dispute.[22]Land belonging to the residents of the village has been used to construct hundreds of structures in the neighbouring Israeli settlement of Ofra.[26]

Ein Yabrud is the home village ofHamasmilitary commander Maher Udda.[27]
