TheEmbassy of Peru in Berlinis the foremost diplomatic mission of theRepublic of PeruinGermany.The embassy is based in Taubenstraße,Berlin-Mitte;theambassadoris Augusto Arzubiaga.[1]

Apart from the embassy in Berlin, Peru also maintainsconsulates-generalinFrankfurt,[2]Hamburg[3]andMunich.[4]

History[edit]

As a result of the establishment of consular relations between Peru and the thenGerman Confederation,Peru opened a series ofconsulatesin different states, starting withHamburgin 1840.[5]

As a result ofWorld War I,Peru severed its relations with theGerman Empirein 1917, with the Spanish Embassy taking charge of Peruvian interests in Germany until 1920.[6]This situation again took place duringWorld War IIwithSwitzerlandnow acting as theprotecting powerof Peru, as the embassy in Berlin closed in February 1942.[7]

Embassy in Bonn (1951–2001)[edit]

After Peru andWest Germanynormalized relations in 1951, Peru opened a diplomatic mission inBonn(being preceded by theHotel Königshoffor a short period).[8]Two years later, relations were elevated to embassy level.[9]The embassy's library was targeted in anarsonattack in 1987 on the anniversary of thePeruvian prison massacresthat took place one year prior off the coast ofCallao.[10]

After thereunification of Germanyin 1990, the embassy in Bonn remained open until 2001, when it was moved to Berlin under the government ofAlejandro Toledostarting on November 1.[11]

Embassy in East Berlin (1972–1990)[edit]

After acoup d'étatin 1968 and the establishment of amilitary governmentbyJuan Velasco Alvarado,relations were established withEast Germanyin 1972, with Peru opening an embassy inEast Berlin.[12]The embassy (also accredited toBoliviaafter 1973) was located onOtto-Grotewohl-Straße5, 108Berlin-Mitte(in 1984),[13]later being located on Schadowstrasse 6/IV (in 1988).[14]The ambassador was once recalled in 1986 due to an arms smuggling incident.[15]
