Escambia Bayis abaylocated inEscambiaandSanta Rosacounties, in the far westernFlorida Panhandle.The city ofPensacolais located on the western side, and the town ofMiltonis located on the northeastern end of the two-pronged bay. Both places are thecounty seatsof the respectivecounties.Unusually, Escambia Bay is connected to open waters viaPensacola Bayto its southeast. It is fed primarily by theEscambia River.[1]
National Airlines Flight 193,aBoeing 727,crashed into Escambia Bay during a descent intoPensacola Regional Airporton May 8, 1978. There were 3 fatalities among the 58 people on board.
DuringHurricane Ivanin September 2004, thestorm surgefrom theGulf of Mexicocame into Escambia Bay, washing out theInterstate 10Escambia Bay Bridge.
