Fedir Kindratovych Vovk(Ukrainian:Федір Кіндратович Вовк,1847–1918) also known asKhvedir Vovk(Ukrainian:Хведір Вовк[1][2]) was a Ukrainiananthropologist-archaeologist,the curator of theAlexander III MuseuminSt. Petersburg.[3][4]
Vovk graduated fromKyiv Universityin 1871. He was an active member of the KyivHromada.From 1887 to 1905 he lived inParisto escapetsaristpersecution; he earned a Ph.D. in 1900, and won the Godard Prize for his dissertation. In 1905 he returned to Russia, where, along with his position at the Alexander III Museum, he held a lecturership atSaint Petersburg University.He was granted a professorship at Kiev University in 1917 but died before he could take it up.[4]
Vovk's research concerned the anthropological study of theUkrainian people;in it he argued that the Ukrainians constituted a separate group ofSlavsmost closely related to theSouthern Slavs(Dinaric race).[4]
