Flat Rock State Forestis 1,931-acre (7.81 km2) aNew York State Department of Environmental Conservationstate forestproperty located inAltona,New York.[1]It is home to a Sandstone Pavement Barrens. The Sandstone Pavement Barrens community is a narrow regional endemic that is possibly restricted to the northernmost counties of New York, north of theAdirondack Mountainsin the northeastern portion of theGreat LakesEcoregion, where thebedrockissandstone.The Sandstone Pavement Barrens is concentrated in theChamplain ValleyofClintonandEssexCounties where it reaches large patch size. Several small patch occurrences are reported from theEastern OntarioandSt. Lawrence Lowlandsincluding islands in theThousand IslandsRegion. Additional occurrences are suspected from withinLake George.[2]

This community is possibly restricted to the northeastern portion of theGreat Lakes Basinand parts ofMaine.It may extend intoNorthernandCentral Canada.The narrowly defined jack pinePinus banksianadominated barrens are known from northeastern New York, southernQuebecand Maine. Similar communities may also occur in Ontario,Minnesota,andIowa.[2]
