Food & Wineis an American monthlymagazinepublished byDotdash Meredith.It was founded in 1978[2][3]by Ariane andMichael Batterberry.It featuresrecipes,cookingtips,travelinformation,restaurant reviews,chefs,wine pairingsand seasonal/holiday content and has been credited byThe New York Timeswith introducing the dining public to "Perrier,thepurple Peruvian potatoandPatagonian toothfish".
The premier event for the magazine is the Food & Wine Classic inAspen, Colorado.The Classic featureswine tasting,cooking demonstrations, featured speakers, as well as a cooking competition. Held annually in June, the event is considered the kickoff to the Aspen summer season and celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2023.
The winner ofTop Chef,thereality televisioncooking competition, is featured in a spread in this magazine.

Michaeland Ariane Batterberry's early writing work on food included the 1973 bookOn the Town in New York, From 1776 to the Present,aculinary history of New York Citythat was republished in 1998 byRoutledgein celebration of the book's 25th anniversary. The Batterberrys had first met an arts benefit on the roof ofManhattan'sSt. Regis Hoteland had not initially been food writers, with Michael working as a journalist and the couple working together as arts editors atHarper's Bazaar.They first conceived of the idea of writing a book about food all over the world after spending a weekend together with best-selling wine writerHugh Johnson,who later dropped out of the writing project. The original edition of the book was described byThe Washington Postas "the authoritative history of dining in the country's culinary capital". The Batterberry's saw "a big changeover at the moment we foundedFood and Winein the late '70s "from a time when" it was the little wife in the kitchen "to a period in which more men developed an interest in cooking.[4]
With Robert and Lindy Kenyon covering the business side and with funding byHugh Hefner,the Batterberrys started publishingThe International Review of Food and Winein 1978, which had a prototype issue published inPlayboy.Later renamed simplyFood & Wine,the magazine's mission was to be a more down-to-earth alternative toGourmetand its "truffled pomposity", with the goal of appealing to both women and men as readers, and early issues featuring articles by such non-traditional food writers asGeorge PlimptonandWilfrid Sheed.When it was first published, a senior editor ofGourmetmagazine scoffed at the new alternative, saying "We don't look at the others as competition. They look at us, try to copy us and fail miserably". By 1980, when it was sold toAmerican Express,the magazine had circulation of 250,000 per issue, evenly split by gender, and was distributing 900,000 copies a month as of 2009. The magazine's style of simple meals, diet foods and easy-to-follow cooking instructions set a standard that became the model for a generation of cooking shows and publications. The Batterberrys went on to co-foundFood Artsmagazine, a publication aimed at restaurants and hotels.[5][6]

Dana Cowinserved as theeditor-in-chiefofFood & Winefor 21 years.[7]She resigned from the post in late 2015.[7]In February 2016, Nilou Motamed replaced her as editor-in-chief.[8]In June 2017, Hunter Lewis replaced her as editor-in-chief.[9]
Food & Wine Classic[edit]
The Food & Wine Classicis an annual event presented byFood & Wine Magazinesince 1986. The Classic takes place inAspen, Coloradoin June of each year. The event featureswine tasting,cooking demonstrations, featured speakers, as well as a cooking competition.[10]
The event celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2012, featuring singersCee Lo Green,Elvis Costello,athleteWes Welker,and chefBobby Flay.[11]
A trip to the event is offered as part of the grand prize for the winner of the reality television seriesTop Chef.[12]
On June 19, 2011,QVCdid broadcast theFood & Wine Classiclive.[13]

Since 1988,Food & Winehas published an annual list of the ten best new chefs in America. Ownership[edit]
Food & Winemagazine was purchased from American Express Publishing by Time Inc. on October 1, 2013.[16]Some editorial offices moved to the Time Inc office ofSouthern LivinginBirmingham,Alabamain late 2017, and others remain in New York City. Meredith Corporation acquired Time Inc. in 2018. Dotdash closed on the purchase of Meredith in December 2021 to create the new company Dotdash Meredith.
