Réunionis anoverseas départementof France.[1]

The island's conventional name is theDepartment of Réunion,orRéunion.The French flag is used on the island. The island's capital isSaint-Denis,[1]and the island is divided into 4arrondissements,24communesand 25cantons.[2]

Réunion is governed byFrench lawunder Article 73 of theConstitution of France,under which the laws and regulations are applicable as of right, as in metropolitan France.[3]Suffrage is granted universally[4]to all those over the age of 18.[5]

Executive branch[edit]

The chief of state is theFrench PresidentEmmanuel Macron,[6]who is represented byPrefectJacques Billant.The President of theRegional CouncilisHuguette Bello.The president of theDepartmental CouncilisCyrille Melchior.

Electionsheld in Réunion include theFrench presidential vote.[citation needed]Aprefectis appointed by the president on the advice of theFrench Ministry of the Interior.[citation needed]The presidents of the General and Regional Councils are elected by members of those councils.[citation needed]

Legislative branch[edit]

The regional council has 45 seats, and exercises the powers of a French region and certain specific powers of an overseas region.

The departmental council has 50 seats, and exercises departmental powers.

Réunion participates in French elections to theEuropean Parliament.It was formerly a part of the Indian Ocean section of theOverseas constituency,before France reverted to a single constituency in 2019.

Judicial branch[edit]

The Judicial branch of the overseas département is run by the Cour d'Appel (Court of Appeals).[citation needed]

International organization participation[edit]

Reunion is a member in theIndian Ocean Commission(InOC)[8]since 1986,[9]and of theWorld Federation of Trade Unions.[citation needed]
