Francesco Gonin(December 16, 1808 inTurin– September 14, 1889 inGiaveno,nearSusa,Piedmont) was an Italian painter,engraverandscenographer.

Early life[edit]

Francesco's father Giovanni was ofFrenchdescent, and his mother Sara Castanier wasGerman.He initially studied underGiovanni Battista Biscarraat theAccademia Albertina.He later learnedfrescopainting from the scenic designer of theTeatro Regioat Turin,Luigi Vacca,ultimately married Vacca's daughter.[1]

Career[edit]

He illustratedAlessandro Manzoni'sI Promessi Sposi(The Betrothed). From 1840 to 1841, he collaborated withCarlo Bellosioto paint the ballroom and hall at theRoyal Palacein Turin. Francesco and Bellosiofrescoedfor theCastello di Racconigi.In 1844, he decorated the walls and ceiling of the theatre in the city ofLa Spezia.In 1845, theCarignanoof Turin was decorated by Francesco. He spent the next year decorating three churches in Turin: San Massimo, San Dalmazzo, and Santissima Annunziata.

He painted the theaters ofAstiandVigevano,the Cathedral of Alessandria, the church Della Sforzesca, and the figures at the waiting hall of thetrain station of Porta Nuova.He also painted many historical canvases.[2]Among his most notable works are:
