Friedrich Hirth

Friedrich HirthPh.D. (16 April 1845 inGräfentonna,Saxe-Gotha– 10 January 1927 inMunich) was aGerman-Americansinologist.[1]

Biography[edit]

He was educated at the universities ofLeipzig,Berlin,andGreifswald(Ph.D., 1869). He was in theChinese Maritime Customs Servicefrom 1870 to 1897. In 1902, Professor Hirth was appointed to the first Dean Lung Professorship of Chinese atColumbia University(New York City).

Prior to World War II, a collection of Chinese manuscripts and printed books made by him was in theRoyal Library at Berlin,and another ofporcelainsof considerable historical importance in theGotha Museum;most of the Hirth collection from theStaatsbibliothekin Berlin is now inKraków.[2]As an investigator he conducted researches inChinese literatureby imitation of the methods of classicalphilology.
