Biography[edit]

Berchtold was born inStráž nad Nežárkou(German:Platz an der Naser) (nowJindřichův Hradec District), in the Austrian Empire. He graduated from medical school in 1804, after which he practicedmedicineand devoted much of his time tobotanyandnatural history.He eventually abandoned regular medical practice and travelled throughout Europe, theMiddle EastandBrazil.He co-authored several research papers with brother botanistsCarl Borivoj PreslandJan Svatopluk Presl,including an important taxonomic work,O Přirozenosti Rostlin.[1]

An avid worker for Czech national revival, Berchtold was involved in the establishment of thePrague National Museum.He died in 1876 in Buchlau (nowBuchlovice),Moravia(now part of theCzech Republic).

The genusBerchtoldiaC.Presl (syn.ChaetiumNees) was named in his honor.
