Günter Matthias Ziegler(born 19 May 1963) is a German mathematician who has been serving as president of theFree University of Berlinsince 2018.[1]Ziegler is known for his research indiscrete mathematicsandgeometry,and particularly on thecombinatorics of polytopes.

Biography[edit]

Ziegler studied at theLudwig Maximilian University of Munichfrom 1981 to 1984, and went on to receive hisPh.D.from theMassachusetts Institute of TechnologyinCambridge, Massachusetts,in 1987, under the supervision ofAnders Björner.After postdoctoral positions at theUniversity of Augsburgand theMittag-Leffler Institute,he received hishabilitationin 1992 fromTechnische Universität Berlin], which he joined as a professor in 1995.[2][3]Ziegler has since joined the faculty of theFree University of Berlin.

Awards and honors[edit]

Ziegler was awarded the one millionDeutschmarkGerhard Hess Prize[de]by theDeutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft(DFG) in 1994 and the 1.5 million DeutschmarkGottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize,Germany's highest research honor, by the DFG in 2001.[2][4]He was awarded the 2005Gauss Lectureshipby theGerman Mathematical Society.In 2006 theMathematical Association of Americaawarded Ziegler and Florian Pfender its highest honor for mathematical exposition, theChauvenet Prize,for their paper onkissing numbers.[3][5]

In 2006 Ziegler became president of theGerman Mathematical Societyfor a two-year term.[3]In 2009, theEuropean Research Council(ERC) awarded Ziegler one of the ERC Advanced Grants in the amount of 1.85 millionEuros.[6]In 2012 he became a fellow of theAmerican Mathematical Society.[7]In 2013 Ziegler was granted theHector Science Award[8]and became a member of theHector Fellow Academy.[9]Since 2016 Ziegler has been chair of theBerlin Mathematical School.In 2018 he received theLeroy P. Steele Prizefor Mathematical Exposition (jointly withMartin Aigner) forProofs from THE BOOK.[10]
