Gurukumar Bhalachandra Parulkar(1 December 1931 – 4 May 2021) was an Indian cardiothoracic surgeon and a professor emeritus atKing Edward Memorial Hospital and Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College.He also served as the president of the Association of Surgeons of India in 1984.[1]
Biography
[edit]Born on 1 December 1931 atMumbaiin the Indian state ofMaharashtra,[2]Parulkar served as an associate ofPrafulla Kumar Sen,a pioneer of cardiac surgery in India.[3]A graduate of theUniversity of Mumbai,he did advanced training atBaylor College of Medicineand on his return to India, he introduced the technique ofhypothermic circulatory arrest technique of resection of aortic aneurysmsin India.[4]He was one of the doctors who attended to the victim in theAruna Shanbaug case.[5][6]
Parulkar received theDr. B. C. Roy Awardfrom the Medical Council of India in 1997.[7]TheGovernment of Indiaawarded him thePadma Bhushan,the third highest civilian award, in 1998.[8]He is also a recipient of the 2009The Marathon Teacher Awardof theMaharashtra University of Health Sciences[9]and a number of other honors.[2]
Parulkar died on 4 May 2021, at the age of 89.[10]
