Galena Summitis a highmountain passin thewestern United Statesin centralIdaho,at anelevationof 8,701 feet (2,652 m) abovesea level.The pass is located in theBoulder Mountains,in the northwest corner ofBlaine County,within theSawtooth National Recreation Areaof theSawtooth National Forest.

The summit is onState Highway 75,theSawtooth Scenic Byway,[1]and is 29 miles (47 km) northwest ofKetchumand theSun Valleyski resort.It is the highest summit of a highway in theNorthwest.Prior to 1977, Highway 75 was designatedU.S. Route 93,[2][3][4]which is now to the east on the former U.S. 93 alternate, throughArcoand theLost River Valley.

Galena Summit marks the divide between theBig Wood RiverandSalmon Riverdrainage areas. A little more than one mile (1.6 km) west of the summit is Galena Overlook, a scenic viewpoint at 8,400 feet (2,560 m). It offers views of theSawtooth rangeto the northwest and the headwaters of the Salmon River in theStanleyBasin ofCuster County,which Highway 75 follows north to Obsidian andStanley,then east and north towardsChallis.The overlook facilities were originally opened in 1964, renamed in 2006 forFrankandBethine Church,[5]and renovated in 2010.[6]

TheGalena Lodge(in historic Galena) is at 7,290 feet (2,220 m), on the Ketchum side of the summit, and hostscross country skiing.[7][8]Collegiatealpineski races were held on the summit in late 1947, due to a lack of snow at Sun Valley, and supplies were dropped in by airplane.[9]TheOre-IdaWomen's Challengebicycle race (1984–2002) had a stage that crested the summit.[10][11]

Galenais amineral,lead sulfide, an important lead ore;[12]deposits of galena often containsilver.
