Gamu-Gofa
Gamu-Gofawas aprovincein the southern part ofEthiopia,named after two of theethnic groupsliving within its boundaries, theGamoand theGofa.First incorporated into Ethiopia by EmperorMenelik IIin the 1880s[citation needed],its capital was first atChencha,then around 1965 the capital was moved toArba Minch.[1]This province was bordered on the west and north byKaffa,on the north and east bySidamo,on the southeast byLake Chew Bahir,and on the south byKenyaandLake Turkana.
Gamu-Gofa Province came into existence as a result of Proclamation 1943/1, which created 12taklai ghizats from the existing 42 provinces of varying sizes.[2]With the adoption of thenew constitution in 1995,Gamu-Gofa was reorganized into theSemien OmoandDebub Omo Zonesof theSouthern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Regionof Ethiopia.[citation needed]
