Lorrainis a language (often referred to aspatois) spoken by now a minority of people inLorraineinFrance,small parts ofAlsaceand inGaumein Belgium.[3]It is alangue d'oïl.

It is classified as aregional language of Franceand has the recognised status of a regional language ofWallonia,where it is known asGaumais.[2]It has been influenced byLorraine FranconianandLuxembourgish,West Central Germanlanguages spoken in nearby or overlapping areas.[citation needed]

Features

Linguist Stephanie Russo noted the difference of a 'second'imperfectandpluperfecttense between Lorrain and Standard French.[4]It is derived from Latin grammar that no longer is used in modern French.

TheLinguasphere Observatorydistinguishes seven variants:

After 1870, members of theStanislas Academyin Nancy noted 132 variants of Lorrain from Thionville in the north to Rupt-sur-Moselle in the south, which means that main variants have sub-variants.
