Gavin Scott Williams(born July 26, 1999) is an Americanprofessional baseballpitcherfor theCleveland GuardiansofMajor League Baseball(MLB). He made his MLB debut in 2023.

Amateur career[edit]

Williams attendedCape Fear High SchoolinFayetteville, North Carolina.As a senior in 2017, he threw two consecutiveno-hittersafter returning to play after undergoing surgery on a torn meniscus.[1][2]He ended his senior year 6–1 with a 0.35 ERA over 39 innings.[3]He was selected by theTampa Bay Raysin the 30th round of the2017 Major League Baseball draft,but did not sign, instead enrolling atEast Carolina University.[4][5]

In 2018, as a freshman at East Carolina, Williams missed time due to a forearm strain but still compiled a 1.15 ERA over15+23innings.[6]After the 2018 season, he playedcollegiate summer baseballwith theBourne Bravesof theCape Cod Baseball League.[7]As a sophomore in 2019, he appeared in 21 games (five starts), going 1–4 with a 4.56 ERA over49+13innings.[8][9]In 2020, he pitched three innings before the college baseball season was cancelled due to theCOVID-19 pandemic.He was considered a top prospect for the2020 Major League Baseball draft,but went unselected.[10][11]Williams moved into the starting rotation for the 2021 season.[12]He missed the beginning of the year with a minor injury but still appeared in 15 games (making 12 starts), going 10–1 with a 1.88 ERA with 130 strikeouts over81+13innings.[13][14]He was named theAmerican Athletic ConferencePitcher of the Year alongside earning2021 College Baseball All-America Teamhonors.[15][16][17][18]

Professional career[edit]

TheCleveland Indiansselected Williams in the first round, with the 23rd overall selection, of the2021 Major League Baseball draft.[19]He signed for $2.25 million.[20]

Williams was assigned to theLake County Captainsof theHigh-AMidwest Leagueto make his professional debut and begin the 2022 season.[21]After nine starts in which he went 2-1 with a 1.40 ERA and 67 strikeouts over 45 innings, he was promoted to theAkron RubberDucksof theDouble-AEastern League.[22]Over 16 starts with Akron, he posted a 3-3 record with a 2.31 ERA and 82 strikeouts over seventy innings.[23]He returned to Akron to open the 2023 season.[24]After three starts, he was promoted to theColumbus Clippersof theTriple-AInternational League.[25]Williams logged a 3–2 record and 2.93 ERA with 61 strikeouts across 9 starts for Columbus.

On June 20, 2023, the Guardians announced that Williams would be promoted to the major leagues for the first time to start the following day against theOakland Athletics.[26]In 16 starts during his rookie campaign, he recorded a 3–5 record and 3.29 ERA with 81 strikeouts across 82 innings pitched.

Williams began the 2024 season on the injured list with right elbow inflammation.[27]He was transferred to the 60–day injured list on May 9, 2024.[28]Williams was activated from the injured list on June 30.[29]
