TheHouse of Gediminidor simply theGediminids[a]were adynastyofmonarchsin theGrand Duchy of Lithuaniathat reigned from the 14th to the 16th century.[1]Acadet branchof this family, known as theJagiellonian dynasty, reigned also in theKingdom of Poland,Kingdom of HungaryandKingdom of Bohemia.[2]Several other branches ranked among the leading aristocratic dynasties of Poland and Russia into recent times.[1]

TheGediminas' Capwas used during theinaugurationsof Gediminids asLithuanian monarchsin theVilnius Cathedraland symbolized the dynasty's continuity.[3][4][5]

Their monarchical title inLithuanianprimarily was, by some folkloristic data, kunigų kunigas( "Duke of Dukes" ), and later on,didysis kunigas( "Great/High Duke" ) or, in a simple manner, karalius or kunigaikštis.[citation needed]In the 18th century, the latter form was changed intotautologicaldidysis kunigaikštis, which nevertheless would be translated as "Grand Duke"(for its etymology, seeGrand Prince).

Origin[edit]

The origin ofGediminashimself is much debated. Some sources say he wasVytenis'ostler, others that he was of peasant stock. Some historians consider him as the son or grandson of Lithuanian orYatvingianKing/dukeSkalmantas.Most scholars agree, however, that Gediminas wasVytenis' brother (the parentage of Vytenis is explained differently in various fake genealogies, compiled from the 16th century onwards; according to the latest Polish research, his parentage cannot be established).[6]

Branches of the dynasty[edit]

TheEastern Orthodoxbranches of the family were initiallyRuthenizedto some extent. The majority of these families (e.g.,Czartoryski) soon converted toRoman Catholicismand becamePolonized.Others (e. g. theGolitsyn(Galitzine),KurakinandTrubetskoy) moved toMuscovy, became thoroughlyRussifiedand are among theprincely families of Russia.

In Poland, some Gediminid families (such as Olelkowicz-Słucki,Wiśniowiecki,Zbaraski) are extinct, but others survive to the present:Chowański,Czartoryski,Sanguszko,Siesicki(Dowmont-Siesicki, Szeszycki), andKoriatowicz-Kurcewicz.[citation needed].

The Russian Gediminid families includeBulgakov,Golitsin,Kurakin,Khovansky,Troubetzkoy,Mstislavsky,Belsky, andVolynsky. Some of these families also survive, as of 2020.[citation needed]
