Geoffrey Cook(born 9 October 1951)[1]is a formerEnglishcricketer,who played in sevenTest matchesand sixOne Day Internationalsfrom 1981 to 1983. Cricket writer, Colin Bateman, stated "A player held in great respect by his fellow professionals, Cook got his big chance when the firstrebel tourwent toSouth Africain 1982, but he was unable to convert his consistent county form into Test success ".[1]
Career
[edit]In county cricket he played forNorthamptonshirewhere, along withRobin Boyd-Moss,he achieved a second wicket partnership of 344, which remains a Northamptonshire record. Cook made a century ascaptainand wasman of the matchin the final of theNatWest Bank Trophyin 1981 atLord'sagainstDerbyshire,although he finished on the losing side.[2](The previous year he had had a happier experience at Lord's, helpingNorthamptonshireto win theBenson and Hedges Cup.)[3]His 1981 Lord's hundred helped win Cook selection on England's tours that to winter toIndiaandSri Lanka.[4]It was observed that he mounted a "staunch battle forTestrecognition "towards the end of these tours,[5]with scores of 104 in successivefirst-classinnings against theCentral Zone,[6]and the Sri Lanka Board President's XI.[5]He duly made his Test debut inSri Lanka's inaugural test in 1982.[7]Cook made his highest Test score of 66 againstIndiathe following summer,[8]playing seven Tests in total, but struggledin Australia in the following winter.He later moved toDurham,when they gainedfirst-classstatus, becoming their firstcounty captain.After running the county's youth Academy, he was appointed first team coach in March 2007, followingMartyn Moxon's resignation. Under Cook's guidance, Durham won their first major title in the club's history atLord'sin 2007, and went on to win theCounty Championshipfor the first time in2008,and again in2009.In June 2013 Cook suffered aheart attack.[9]He completed the season and won the County Championship for a third time with Durham in2013.[10]Cook was subsequently replaced full-time as first team coach byJon Lewis,moving into a youth development role.[11]
He has been both chairman and secretary of theProfessional Cricketers' Association.[1]
