George Everett Adams(June 18, 1840 – October 5, 1917) was aU.S. RepresentativefromIllinois.
Early years
[edit]Adams was born inKeene, New Hampshire,on June 18, 1840, son of Benjamin F. Adams and Louisa Redington, grandson ofBenjamin Adams,and a descendant of William Adams ofIpswich, Massachusetts.[1]
Adams moved with his parents toChicago, Illinois,in 1853.[1]He attendedPhillips Exeter Academy,Exeter, New Hampshire,andHarvard University.[2]He was graduated from Harvard anA.B.in 1860 and anLL.B.,1865.[1]During theCivil War,he served in the First Illinois Artillery. After his war service, he attendedHarvard Law School,wasadmitted to the barin 1865 in Chicago and commenced practice of his profession in 1867.[1][3]
Career
[edit]He served as a member of theIllinois State Senatefrom 1881 until March 3, 1883, when he resigned to enterCongress.[1]
Adams was elected as aRepublicanto theForty-eighth Congressand to the three succeeding Congresses from March 4, 1883, to March 3, 1891 (49th,50thand51stcongresses).[1]He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1890 to theFifty-second Congress.[2] He was one of the founders of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, being instrumental with a few others in securing the land in downtown Chicago where the orchestra is today. />
Last years
[edit]On retiring from public life Adams continued the practice of law in Chicago until his death.[1]He died at his summer home inPeterborough, New Hampshire,on October 5, 1917, and he was interred inPine Hill CemeteryatDover, New Hampshire.[2]
