Giovanni Gioseffo dal Sole

Giovanni Gioseffo dal Sole(10 December 1654 – 22 July 1719) was anItalianpainter and engraver fromBologna,active in the late-Baroqueperiod. Upon the death ofCarlo Cignani,Gioseffo dal Sole became among the most prominent painters in Bologna, described as theGuidoModerno.[1]

Biography

His father, Giovanni Antonio Maria, also calledMochino de` Paesidue to his ambidextrous dexterity, was a landscape painter who trained withFrancesco Albani.[2]Giovanni Gioseffo first apprenticed withDomenico Maria Canuti,and then in 1672; he entered the Roman studio ofLorenzo Pasinelli.He painted frescoes in the cupola ofSanta Maria dei Poveriin Bologna,[3]and an altarpiece of theTrinity(1700) for theChiesa del SuffragioinImola.He is said to have collaborated withGiuseppe Maria Crespi.

He was one of the painters who contributed a canvas depicting the mythologic scene ofAndromache weeping before Aeneasfor the renownedAenid Galleryof thePalazzo BuonaccorsiinMacerata;a decoration that employed many of the premier contemporary artists: with frescoes byRambaldi,Dardani,andSolimena;and canvases byGarzi,Gambarini,Balestra,Lazzarini,andFranceschini.

Two paintings by Dal Sole,Diana with cupidsandEcstasy of the Magdalenare found in thePalazzo Spalletti-Trivelliin Bologna. There is aSalome with the St John the Baptistin the Fitzwilliam Museum attributed to Giovanni Gioseffo. He also frescoed the Palazzo Mansi inLuccawith aJudgement of Paris.

Among his many pupils wereFelice Torelli,Lucia Casalini(Torelli's wife),[4]Antonio Beduzzi,Francesco Monti (Bologna),Bastiano Galleoti,[5]Gioseffo Vitali,Donato Creti,Giovanni Battista Grati(Batistino Grati), of Bologna[6]Gioseffo[7]andCesare Mazzoni,Bernardino Norsini,[8]Giacomo Pavia,[9]Antonio Lunghi,[10]Carlo Salis,[11]Francesco Pavona,Dionigi Donnini(Girolamo Donini),[12]Francesco Comi(il Fornaretto), and Jacopo Saeta.[13]He also played some role as a mentor to a pupil of Pasinelli and Sirani (though unclear father or daughterElisabetta),Teresa Muratori Scannabecchi,[14]and his Giovanni Gioseffo's granddaughter Francesca Fantoni.[15]
