Gleofilo Sabrino Rudewald Hasselbaink Vlijter(born 17 September 1999) is a Surinamese professionalfootballerwho plays as a striker forSerbian SuperLigaclubOFK Beogradand theSuriname national team.[1]

Club career

Youth career

Vlijter started his career withS.V. Robinhoodof theSVB Hoofdklasse,the highest level of football in Suriname. He was with the club since at least December 2013.[2]In May 2014, he was invited to a football clinic in Suriname sponsored byChelsea.[3]

In January 2015, while a member of the Phoenix All Stars Football Academy inJamaica,Vlijter traveled to Europe for the first time as he was invited to a trial with Belgian top-division clubGenk.At that time, he received a letter of recommendation from the club to apply for a visa.[4]However, a deal with that club and another withKV Oostendefell through and the player returned to Suriname.[5]

In October 2016 it was announced that Vlijter and fellow Surinamese youth international Ayad Godlieb were on trial withFeyenoord Rotterdamof the DutchEredivisie.It was expected that they would be signed to a contract with the club'sacademyin January 2017 if they could acquire work visas.[6]The pair of players first trialed with the club in September 2016 while still playing forS.V. Robinhoodin Suriname.[7]

On 9 January 2018 he signed for the youth team ofIroni Kiryat Shmonafor the remainder of the season with a club option for further three years.[8]

Senior career

After one season with the Israeli club in which he was primarily a member of the reserve team he signed forFC Torpedo Kutaisiof theGeorgianErovnuli Liga.He joined as the team was preparing to enter the preliminary round of the2018–19 UEFA Champions League.[9]

In August 2019 it was announced that Vlijter had signed a two-year contract withAris Limassolof theCypriot Second Division.[10] In his first unofficial match with Aris Limassol, he scored a hat-trick againstAEZ.He made his league debut for Aris in a 0–1 loss toAlki Oroklini.[11]

On 4 August 2020, Vlijter signed a three-year deal withIsraeli Premier LeagueclubBeitar Jerusalem.[12]

After a stint withDoxa KatokopiasinCypriot First Division,Vlijter signed withVeikkausliigaclubVaasan Palloseura(VPS) in Finland.[13]His deal with VPS was terminated on 6 August 2024.

Vlijter joinedOFK Beogradon 8 August 2024.[14]

Personal life

Gleofilo is the cousin of Surinamese internationalsNigel HasselbainkandRoscello Vlijter.His dad also played in theSVB Hoofdklasse.

International career

Vlijter represented Suriname at the U15[2]and U16 levels.[3]During a U15 tournament held inFrench Guianain late 2013, he was identified by the coaching staff as one of four players who impressed the most.[15]He made hisseniorinternational debut at age 15 on 30 April 2015 in afriendlyagainstGuyana.[16]

Vlijter won the Golden Boot Award for the2019–20 CONCACAF Nations Leagueafter scoring ten goals in six matches inLeague B.[17]In June 2021 Vlijter was named to Suriname's 23-man squad for the2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup.[18]On 16 July 2021 he scored Suriname's first-everCONCACAF Gold Cupgoal in a 1–2 defeat toCosta Rica.[19]By October 2023, Vlijter was only one goal away from tyingStefano Rijssel's goal scoring record of fourteen for Suriname going into2023–24 CONCACAF Nations League Amatches againstHaitiandGrenada.[20]
