Inbaseball, agolden sombrerois a player's inglorious feat ofstriking outfour times in a single game.

Etymology[edit]

The term derives fromhat trick, and since four is bigger than three, the rationale was that a four-strikeout performance should be represented by a bigger hat, such as asombrero.[1]Though one account creditsSan Diego PadresplayerCarmelo Martínezwith inventing the term in the mid-1980s,[2]"sombrero" was already in use to describe a four-strikeout game at least as early as 1977,[3]and "golden sombrero" appeared in print in a 1979 article about slang used by the minor leagueJackson Mets.[4]

TheOlympic ringsorplatinum sombreroapplies to a player striking out five times in a game.[5]

Ahornrefers to a player striking out six times in a game; the term was coined by pitcherMike Flanaganafter teammateSam Hornof theBaltimore Oriolesaccomplished the feat in an extra-inning game in 1991.[6][7]Alternate names for this accomplishment aretitanium sombreroordouble platinum sombrero.[8]
