HMSCampania
Two ships of theRoyal Navyhave been namedHMSCampaniaafter the region ofCampaniainItaly:
- RMSCampaniawas a Britishocean linerowned by the Cunard Steamship Line Shipping Company, launched in 1892. While awaiting demolition in 1914 theBritish Admiraltybought her to convert into anarmed merchant cruiserthat could carryseaplanes.
- The firstHMSCampania(1914),purchased in 1914, was the passenger liner RMSCampaniaconverted to aseaplane tender.She collided withRoyal OakandGloriousin 1918 and sank in theFirth of Forth.The wreck-site was designated under theProtection of Wrecks Acton 1 December 2001.
- The secondHMSCampania(D48)was anescort carrierlaunched in 1943. She served inWorld War IIand was broken up in 1955.
