Hackescher Markt( "Hacke's Market" ) is a square in the centralMittelocality ofBerlin,Germany,situated at the eastern end ofOranienburger Strasse.It is an importanttransport huband a starting point for the city'snightlife.

Originally a marsh north of the city fortifications on the road toSpandau,thePrussiankingFrederick the Greatabout 1750 had a market square laid out under the surveillance of TownmajorHans Christoph Friedrich Graf von Hackein the course of a northern town expansion. It was officially named after Hacke on 23 July 1840.

In 1882 the area received access to theBerlin Stadtbahnrailway line atBerlin Hackescher Markt station,then calledBörseafter the nearbystock exchange.The station was renamedMarx-Engels-Platzduring theGDRera.[1]The railway tracks of the S-Bahn along the eastern and northern sections ofMittebetween the stationsHackescher MarktandJannowitzbrückeare built where theramparts,walls, moats andglacisof theBerlin Fortress,a 17th centurybastion fortaround the historic city limits, had been.

Formerly a rather neglected area,Hackescher Marktwith its old buildings has developed into a cultural and commercial centre afterGerman reunification,famous for its nightlife[2]centered on theHackesche Höfecourtyard ensemble. The square is also served by severaltramwayandnight buslines. A weekly market is still held every Thursday and Saturday.
