Area overview
[edit]The area shown in the map alongside, coveringBerhamporeandKandisubdivisions, is spread across both the natural physiographic regions of the district,Rarhand Bagri.[1][2]The headquarters of Murshidabad district,Berhampore,is in this area.[3]The ruins ofKarnasubarna,the capital ofShashanka,the first important king of ancientBengalwho ruled in the 7th century, is located 9.6 kilometres (6.0 mi) south-west of Berhampore.[4][5][6]The entire area is overwhelmingly rural with over 80% of the population living in the rural areas.[7]

Demographics
[edit]According to the2011 Census of India,Haridasmati had a total population of 6,627, of which 3,399 (51%) were males and 3,228 (49%) were females. Population in the age range 0–6 years was 588. The total number of literate persons in Haridasmati was 4,974 (82.36% of the population 6 years).[8]
Infrastructure
[edit]According to theDistrict Census Handbook, Murshidabad,2011, Haridasmati covered an area of 2.1159 km2.The protected water-supply involved overhead tank, tube well/ bore well. It had 636 domestic electric connections. Among the medical facilities it had 1 hospital, 1 maternity home, 1 veterinary hospital. Among the educational facilities, it had 1 primary school, 1middle school, 2 senior secondary schools. It had 1 non-formal education centre (Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan). It produced wheat, vegetables, sugar cane.[9]
Healthcare
[edit]Berhampore CD block is one of the areas of Murshidabad district where ground water is affected by high level ofarsenic contamination.TheWHOguideline for arsenic in drinking water is 10 mg/ litre, and the Indian Standard value is 50 mg/ litre. The maximum concentration in Berhampore CD block is 635 mg/litre.[10]
