Harry Samuel Broudy(July 27, 1905 – June 24, 1998) was a Polish-born American professor of the philosophy of education.

Early life and education

Broudy was born inFilipów,Grodno Governorate(part of theRussian partitionof thePolish–Lithuanian Commonwealth) in theRussian Empireon July 27, 1905,[1]but his family emigrated, and moved toMilford, Massachusettsin 1912. Broudy attended theMassachusetts Institute of Technologyfor a year, but then transferred toBoston University,where he received hisbachelor's degreeinGerman literatureandphilosophyin 1929. From there, he went toHarvard Universityand earned hismaster's degreeandPh.D.there (both in philosophy), completing the doctorate in 1935. His thesis title wasThe Metaphysical Presuppositions of Personal Existence.[2][3]

Career

Broudy worked for a short time at theMassachusettsDepartment of Education,where he supervised correspondence education. He taughtphilosophy of educationandeducational psychologyatNorth Adams State Teachers Collegefrom 1937 until 1949, then moved toFramingham State Teachers Collegefrom 1949 until 1957. He moved to theUniversity of Illinois at Urbana-Champaignas a professor of the philosophy of education in 1957, where he spent the rest of his career at Illinois. He retired from the full time appointment in 1974 and was appointed as aprofessor emeritus,in which role he stayed active until the early 1990s.[2][4]

Work

Broudy's philosophical views were based on the tradition ofclassical realism,dealing with truth, goodness, and beauty. However he was also influenced by the modern philosophiesexistentialismandinstrumentalism.In his textbookBuilding a Philosophy of Educationhe has two major ideas that are the main points to his philosophical outlook: The first is truth and the second is universal structures to be found in humanity's struggle for education and the good life. Broudy also studied issues on society's demands on school. He thought education would be a link to unify the diverse society and urged the society to put more trust and a commitment to the schools and a good education.

Awards and honors

Broudy was appointed as a laureate ofKappa Delta Piin 1968.[4][5]Volume 25, issue 4 of theJournal of Aesthetic Educationwas dedicated to essays in honor of Broudy.[6]

Personal life

Broudy was naturalized as a United States citizen in 1936.[2]He died on June 24, 1998, inUrbana, Illinois.[1]
