Heinrich Carl Haussknecht(30 November 1838 – 7 July 1903) was a Germanpharmacistandbotanical collectorwho was a native ofBennungen,Sachsen-Anhalt.

Trained as a pharmacist, Haussknecht is remembered for collecting and describing numerous species of plants. His botanical explorations took place inThuringia,Lower Saxony,Greeceand theMiddle East(the present-day nations ofTurkey,Syria,Iraq,Iran), where he discovered, among othersTulipa aleppensis.[1]He established a largeherbariuminWeimar,which after his death was placed under the supervision ofJoseph Friedrich Nicolaus Bornmüller(1862–1948). In 1949, the "Herbarium Haussknecht" was transferred to theUniversity of Jena.[2]

Haussknecht specialized in the study of the genusEpilobiumfrom the botanical familyOnagraceae.In 1884 he published amonographon the genus calledMonographie der Gattung Epilobium.[3]The botanical genusHaussknechtiawas named in his honour byPierre Edmond Boissier(1810-1885) in 1872.[4] Also he was honoured inFerula haussknechtiiWolff ex Rech. f.in 1952.[5]

Haussknecht distributed several large specimen series, all not beingexsiccataein the strong sense, but listed byIndExs – Index of Exsiccatae.[6]
