History

[edit]

It was a small village ofDanu people. The village grew into a town in the 1920s when the single-line railway line was extended fromAungpantoShwenyaung, and Heho was determined to be a convenient intermediate stop and transfer point. Later anairportwas built, 4 km (2.5 mi) northwest of the town. Theairportserved as an airbase both for the Allies and theJapaneseduringWorld War II.The airbase was heavily bombed by theAllies.Evidence of aircraft bunker revetments and bomb craters can still be seen on the southern end of the airfield, especially noticeable from the air.

Air Bagan Flight 011,aFokker 100passenger jet, crashed near Heho on 25 December 2012. Two passengers were found dead in the plane crash. The domestic flight carrying 65 passengers was forced to make an emergency landing nearHeho Airport.[citation needed]
