Henri Amouroux

Henri Amouroux(1 July 1920 inPérigueux,Dordogne– 5 August 2007 inLe Mesnil-Mauger) was a French historian and journalist.

Life and career[edit]

Amouroux was born in the French city ofPérigueuxon 1 July 1920.[1]After studying at theECJ,he began his career as ajournalistduring World War II and joined aFrench Resistancegroup based inBordeaux(group Jade-Amicol[2]). He was awardedCroix de guerre 1939-1945.[3]

Amouroux wrote several books on theGerman occupation of Franceduring his life, especially a ten-volumeLa Grande Histoire des Français sous l'Occupation(The Full History of the French under the Occupation), published from 1976 to 1993. He later worked for several French newspaper (France Soir) radio (France Inter) and television (TF1) stations.[1]Amouroux was called to testify on behalf ofMaurice Paponin 1997, who was on trial in France for his role in thedeportationofJewsduring theGerman occupation of FranceandVichycollaboration. His testimony was used to counter AmericanhistorianRobert O. Paxton's version of the Vichy France period during World War II. His testimony was criticized mostly by lawyers representingJewishHolocaustvictims who accused Amouroux of being an apologist for Papon and Vichy France's collaboration with theNazis.Amouroux denied all charges[1]andMRAP's lawyer,Gérard Boulanger,was convicted for defamation in 1997.[4][5]

Amouroux was a member of theInstitut de Franceand served as president of theAcadémie des Sciences Morales et Politiques.He died in 2007 inNormandyat the age of 87, and was buried in theGironderegion of France.[1]
