The 2nd Duke of Cleveland


GeneralHenry Vane, 2nd Duke of ClevelandKG(6 August 1788 – 18 January 1864) was a Britishpeer,politician and army officer.

BornThe Honourable Henry Vane,he was the eldest son ofWilliam Vane, Viscount Barnardand his first wife, Katherine, the second daughter ofHarry Powlett, 6th Duke of Bolton.In 1792 his father inherited theearldom of Darlingtonfrom his father, whereupon Vane becameViscount Barnard.

In 1812 Barnard becameMember of ParliamentforCounty Durham,a seat he held until 1815. He was then MP forWinchelseafrom 1816 to 1818,Tregonyfrom 1818 to 1826,Totnesfrom 1826 to 1830,Saltashfrom 1830 to 1831 and finally forSouth Shropshirefrom 1832 to 1842. In 1827, Barnard's father was promoted in thePeerageasMarquess of Clevelandin 1827 and further asDuke of Clevelandin 1833, whereupon Barnard becameEarl of Darlingtonafter the first promotion.

In 1815 Darlington had joined theBritish Army,eventually rising through the ranks as alieutenant-colonelin the75th Regiment of Footin 1824,major-generalin 1851,lieutenant-generalin 1857 and finally ageneralin 1863. In 1842, he inherited his father's titles and was also appointed aKnight of the Garterthat year.

On 18 November 1809 atSt George's, Hanover Square,Cleveland had married Lady Sophia Poulett (1785–1859), the eldest daughter ofJohn Poulett, 4th Earl Poulett.He died childless in 1864 and his titles passed to his brother,William.
