TheHouse of Shishman(Bulgarian:Шишман), also referred to as theShishmanidsorShishmanovtsi(Bulgarian:Шишмановци), was a medievalBulgariandynasty ofTurkicCuman[1]origin. The House of Shishman ruled theSecond Bulgarian Empirefrom the proclamation ofMichael Asen IIIas emperor in 1323 to the deposition of his sonIvan Stephenin 1331 whereafter rule fell to theHouse of Sratsimir,who were matrilineal descendants of the Shishmanids.[2]

The Shishmanids were matrilineally descended from the earlierAsen dynasty[2]and may also have been related to the immediately precedingTerter dynasty.[3]
