NGC 5008(also known asIC 4381) is a massivebarred spiral galaxylocated in theBoötesconstellation.[1]

Details

[edit]

It is located 530 millionlight-yearsaway from thesolar systemand was discovered byHeinrich d'Arrest,aPrussianastronomer on May 18, 1862 as NGC 5008.[2]It was again discovered on June 15, 1895 byStephane Javellewho listed it in theIndex Catalogueas IC 4381.[2]With adiameterof 400,000 light-years, NGC 5008 easily dwarfs theMilky Wayand is considered one of thelargest galaxies.[3]According to theSIMBADDatabase, NGC 5008 has aLINERtypeactive galactic nucleus.[4]It has a surface brightnessmagnitudeof 14.07, meaning it is alow-surface brightness galaxy.[5]

Group membership

[edit]
The four galaxies of Hickson compact group 71.

NGC 5008 is the dominant member of theHickson Compact group,HCG 71. The other members of the group are IC 4382, PGC 50640 and PGC 50641, which is further away compared to the other galaxies.[6]
