Il Piccolois the main dailynewspaperofTrieste,Italy.Its name derives from the paper's originalsmallformat.

History and profile

Il Piccolowas founded by Teodoro Mayer in 1881.[1]He was also the owner andeditor-in-chiefof the paper.[1]Mayer and other people who were instrumental in the establishment of the paper wereright-wingpro-Italians.[1][2]Mayer supported the idea that Trieste was part of Italy.[1]One of its contributors wasCarolina Luzzattowho was a supporter of this view.[3]

Il Piccoloceased publication at the beginning ofWorld War Iand was relaunched in 1919.[1]Following the beginning of theFascist rulein Italy the paper declared its adherence to the Fascist ideology in 1923.[4]Until the end ofWorld War IIthe paper was edited by those withfascistpolitical leaning.[2]

Il Piccolois based in Trieste[5]and it is published by Finegil Editoriale SPA[6]which has been a subsidiary ofGruppo Espressosince 1998.[7]Local editions for the towns ofMonfalconeandGoriziaand for the region ofIstria(Croatia) are also printed. It has a progressive political stance.[8]

Circulation

The circulation ofIl Piccolowas 40,231 copies in 2008.[9]The paper had a circulation of 31,302 copies in 2013.[10]The Espresso Group reported that the circulation of the paper was 28,800 copies in 2014.[5]
