Ilmeris a village and formercivil parish,now in the parish ofLongwick-cum-Ilmer,inBuckinghamshire,England. It is at the foot of theChiltern Hillsabout 3 miles (5 km) northwest ofPrinces Risborough,near the boundary withOxfordshire.In 1931 the parish had a population of 40.[1]On 1 April 1934 the parish was abolished to form "Longwick cum Ilmer".[2]

Toponym

The villagetoponymis derived from theOld Englishfor 'Ylla's boundary', referring to the ancient boundary with Oxfordshire.[citation needed]TheDomesday Bookof 1086 records the village asImere.[3]

Parish church

Thenaveof theChurch of England parish churchofSaint Peterdates from the 12th century.[3]In the 14th century thechancelwas rebuilt and a southtranseptwas added to the nave.[3]In the 16th century the timber-framed and weatherboardedbellcotewas added to the west end of the building. In 1662 the south transept was demolished.[3]The building was restored in 1859–60 under the direction of theOxford Diocesanarchitect,G.E. Street.[4]

The bellcote has three bells, all of them cast bybellfoundersfromReading, Berkshire.The tenor was cast in about 1500, probably by William Hasylwood.[3]William Knight cast the second bell in 1568 and Henry Knight cast the treble in 1618.[3]

St Peter's is aGrade II* listed building.[5]

Railway history

In 1899–1905 theGreat Western and Great Central Joint Railwaywas built through the parish. In 1906Ilmer Haltwas opened on the line to serve the village.British Railwaysclosed the halt in 1963. The railway remains open as part of theChiltern Main Linefrom London.

In 1968, a scene fromAlbert R. Broccoli'sChitty Chitty Bang Bangwas filmed along the railway line in which the Baron Bomburst's spies capture the wrong car with Lord Scrumptious inside.[6]
