Jackson McCurtain(1830-1885) was aChoctawpolitician who served as the principal chief of theChoctaw Nationfrom 1880 until 1884.
Biography[edit]
Jackson McCurtain was born inMississippion March 4, 1830, toCornelius McCurtainand Mahayia Nelson. He fought in theAmerican Civil Warserving as a captain in the Confederate First Regiment of Choctaw and Chickasaw Mounted Rifles and later as a lieutenant colonel in the First Choctaw Battalion.[1]After the war he was a successfulChoctawfarmer and rancher who marriedJane Austin McCurtainin 1865. He who served in the Senate of theChoctaw Nationfor many years and who served as the president of the senate from 1870 to 1880 when Principal ChiefIsaac Garvindied.[2][3]After Garvin's death, he was appointed principal chief and served in that position until 1884.[4]He died on November 14, 1885, shortly after leaving office.[2]During his tenure he was known as a progressive chief and for building the first permanent capital for the Choctaw Nation.[3]He was succeeded by his brother,Edmund McCurtain.[4]
