Jacob Graham Bethell(born 23 October 2003) is an Englishcricketerwho plays domestic cricket forWarwickshire,and international cricket forEngland.Bethell was born inBarbadosand moved toWarwickshire,England, when he was 12.[1]He made his WarwickshireTwenty20debut on 20 June 2021, in the2021 T20 Blast.[2]He made his EnglandTwenty20debut on 11 September 2024, againstAustraliaat theRose Bowl,Southampton.[3] On 9 November 2024 he scored 58 not out in his third T20I match, against West Indies, in his birth country of Barbados, in so doing becoming the youngest Englishman to score a 50 in a T20 international, at the age of 21 years and 17 days.
Early life
[edit]Bethell was born and raised inBarbados,[4]where his family had a long involvement with cricket.[5]His grandfather,Arthur Bethell,playedfirst-class cricketfor thenational side.[6][7]He attendedHarrison College,[8]whose alumni includeSir Clyde WalcottandSir Pelham Warner,and was awarded player of the tournament in the West Indies Under-15 competition in 2017. By this stage he had already earned a scholarship atRugby School,where he was coached by their director of cricket and formerWarwickshirecaptainMike Powell.[9]In 2021, he scored 202 in the first innings of Rugby School’s annual two-day fixture againstMarlborough College,a modern day record.
Domestic career
[edit]Bethell played cricket with Warwickshire from a young age, and signed a three-year professional contract with them in January 2021.[10]Former Warwickshire captain andEnglandcricketerIan Belldescribed him as "the best 17-year old" he had ever seen.[11]
He made hisList Adebut in the2021 One-Day Cup,for Warwickshire againstGlamorganat Sophia Gardens, Cardiffon 22 July.[12]He made hisfirst-classdebut on 12 September 2021 atHeadingley,for Warwickshire againstYorkshirein theCounty Championship.[13]
In April 2022,Welsh Firepaid £30,000 to add Bethell to their squad forthat year's seasonof theHundred.[14][15]
In July 2023, he was drafted intoThe Hundredby theBirmingham Phoenix.[16]
Hé took his maiden first-class wicket on 15 April 2024 atEdgbaston,for Warwickshire againstDurhamin the County Championship.[17]
International career
[edit]In September 2021, Bethell was named as the joint-captain of theEngland under-19 cricket teamfor their series against theWest Indies.[18] Bethell was named vice-captain of England's team for the2022 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cupin the West Indies,[19]where he scored 88 from 42 balls in the side's quarter final victory overSouth Africa.[20]In December 2022, he was selected for theEngland U-19sto playAustraliain January 2023, under head coachMichael Yardy.[21][22]
Bethell made his senior international debut atSouthamptonon 11 September 2024, in thefirst gameof a three-matchT20series againstAustralia.In the second fixture atCardiffon 14 September, he scored a "match-winning" 44 of from 24 balls.[23]On 28 October, he was named in theTestsquad for England'stour of New Zealandin November and December.[24][25]
On 9 November 2024 in his third T20I match, against West Indies, in his birth country of Barbados, he scored 58 not out - in so doing becoming the youngest Englishman to score a 50 in a T20 international, at the age of 21 years and 17 days.
