Jakob Ebert(26 January 1549 – 5 February 1614) was a Germantheologianandpoet.
Life
[edit]Born inSprottau,Ebert was the son ofAndreas Ebertus .He was school director inSoldin,SchwiebusandGrünberg.From 1594 he was on the faculty of the universityAlma Mater Viadrina inFrankfurt (Oder),teachingtheology.
Hymns
[edit]Ebert was the author of thehymn"Du Friedefürst, Herr Jesu Christ", which appeared in 1601 with a melody byBartholomäus Gesius.Composers using this hymn includedDietrich Buxtehude(BuxW20 and 21) andJohann Sebastian Bach,who based achorale cantataon it,Du Friedefürst, Herr Jesu Christ,BWV 116,and used it in several other cantatas.
