Jessica Uy was born and raised in thePhilippines,where she was called Jeeca which she notes is "short for Jessica."[1][2]She refers to herself asChinese-Filipino.[1][3][4]She first turned tovegancooking after watching the filmEarthlingsin 2015, right after graduating from high school.[3][1]She initially faced challenges because she was living in the Philippines and "Filipino food isn’t vegan-friendly."[3]She taught herself how to veganize her favorite dishes, which she documents through social media.[2][3][4]
Uy received her degree in Visual Communications from theUniversity of the Philippines Diliman.[4]
