Joel Edward McHale(born November 20, 1971) is an American actor, comedian and television presenter. He is best known for hostingThe Soup(2004–2015) and his role asJeffrey "Jeff" Wingeron theNBCsitcomCommunity(2009–2015). He has performed in the filmsSpider-Man 2(2004),Spy Kids: All the Time in the World(2011),Ted(2012), andThe Happytime Murders(2018).
McHale also starred in the short-livedCBSsitcomThe Great Indoors(2016–2017), hosted a reboot ofCard Sharks(2019–2021), and portrayed the superheroStarmanon the showStargirl(2020–2022). In 2020, he hosted a special aftershow interviewing key subjects from theNetflixdocumentary seriesTiger Kingand voicedJohnny Cagein the direct-to-video martial arts filmMortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge,a role he reprised in its sequel,Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms(2021). He also voices X-PO inLego Dimensions(2015–2017) and The Scientist inFortnite(2021–present). He currently has a lead role in the Fox comedy seriesAnimal Control(2023–present), and recurs on theFX on Hulucomedy-drama seriesThe Bear.
Early life
[edit]McHale was born inRome,Italy on November 20, 1971,[1][2]the son of Jack McHale, who worked as thedean of studentsatLoyola University's Rome Center, and his wife Laurie. His father is American and is fromChicago,while his mother is Canadian and a native ofVancouver.[3]McHale is of Irish and Norwegian descent,[4]and was raised Catholic. He grew up onMercer Island, Washington,and briefly lived inHaddonfield, New Jersey,before returning to Mercer Island.[5]He attendedMercer Island High School.[6]He received abachelor's degreein history from theUniversity of Washingtonin 1995, and was briefly in theTheta Chifraternity but left it because he "couldn't stand it."[7]
McHale was recruited to be on the University of Washington'srowingteam, but later joined itsfootballteam. He was awalk-onas atight end.He spent two years with the team but did not play in any games. He was on the team that played in the1993 Rose Bowl.[8][9]He was part of theAlmost Live!cast, a localsketch comedytelevision show produced bySeattle'sKING-TV.From 1993 to 1997, he was a member of theimprov comedygroup atUnexpected Productions,participating inTheatersports!at the Market Theater located inPike Place Marketin downtown Seattle.[10]He received anMFAfrom the Professional Actors Training Program at the University of Washington.[11]

[edit]In 2004, McHale began hostingThe Soup,a satirical weekly television show on theE!television network. Throughout the show, he takes the audience through the oddities and ridiculous happenings of the week in television. He frequently appears as a co-host onLoveline.He has been a judge onIron Chef America.He was involved in the American version of the British TV showThe IT Crowd.[12][13]McHale made a guest appearance on the finale ofLast Comic Standing's sixth season, when he recapped the show's events in his typical format of jokes made popular onThe Soup.He made an appearance as a guest judge onRuPaul's Drag Raceseason 11, episode 4, "Trump: The Rusical".
McHale was the host at the 2014White House Correspondents' Associationannual dinner.[14]He hosted the 2011Independent Spirit Awardsand the2015 ESPY Awards.In 2016, he appeared as an occasional co-host alongsideKelly Ripain theABCmorning showLive with Kelly.McHale hosted the43rd People's Choice Awardson January 18, 2017, and the2017 Webby Awardson May 15, 2017.[15]McHale hosted video game developer and publisherUbisoft's press conference atE3 2010.[16]
In January 2018, it was announced that he would be receiving his own talk show onNetflixin February.The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHalecombined celebrity guests, pre-taped sketches and video clips in a half-hour series that focused on pop culture and news from around the world.[17]On August 17, 2018, it was announced that Netflix had canceled the show after 19 episodes, reportedly due to low viewership.[18]
On April 8, 2019, TVLine reported that McHale would host a revival of the game showCard SharksforABC.[19]The revival would premiere on June 12 of that year,[20]running for two seasons and 21 episodes until July 7, 2021. The iteration was canceled in April 2022.[21]
Beginning March 27, 2020, McHale co-hostsThe Darkest Timelinepodcast with formerCommunityco-starKen Jeong;the podcast was created in response to the ongoingCOVID-19 pandemic.[22]Also in 2020, he hosted an after-show special of theNetflixdocumentary seriesTiger King.With Jeong, they became the new hosts ofFox'sNew Year's EvespecialNew Year's Eve Toast & Roast.[23]The second edition was canceled due to the quickly rising cases ofOmicron variantin theCOVID-19 pandemic.[24]
In 2021, McHale began hostingCrime Scene Kitchen,also on Fox.[25]In 2023, McHale hosted theE!reality competition seriesHouse of Villains.[26]
Acting

After earning his master's degree in acting, McHale moved to Los Angeles and landed small roles inDiagnosis: Murder,CSI: Miami,andWill & Grace.He played a TV reporter in the biopicLords of Dogtown.He guest-starred as a cast member on theNBCimprov comedy showThank God You're Hereduring the pilot episode and had a guest role on an episode ofPushing Daisies.McHale appeared inSpider-Man 2in a small role as Mr. Jacks, a bank manager.[27]
McHale has a long association withCircle X Theatre,where he has done several plays. McHale was a weekly guest onThe Adam Carolla ShowandMickey and Amelia,and occasional guest onOpie and Anthony.[28]He occasionally appeared onCountdown with Keith Olbermannin a humor sequence closing the show.
McHale starred in the sitcomCommunity,[29]which premiered in fall 2009, and continued to hostThe Soup.[30]McHale made an appearance on the first episode of the fifth season ofTosh.0.He played Rex inTed(2012) and had a short guest stint on the FX showSons of Anarchy.He played a police officer in the supernatural horror filmDeliver Us from Evil.[31]McHale appeared in 3 episodes between the tenth and eleventh seasons ofThe X-Filesin 2016 and 2018, respectively.[32]
McHale played the lead role in theCBSsitcomThe Great Indoors,which began airing in the fall of 2016.[33][34]The series was cancelled on May 13, 2017, due to low ratings.[35]
In 2018, McHale was cast in the recurring role of Chris on the second season of theNetflixhorror-comedy seriesSanta Clarita Diet.[36]
In December 2018, it was announced that McHale was cast asSylvester Pemberton,the Golden Age Starman in theDC UniverseandThe CWseriesStargirl.[37]After sporadic appearances in its first two seasons, he was upgraded to series regular for the third.[38][39]
McHale has been a regular guest panelist onThe Masked Singer.He first guested in episode four ofthe first season,then in two episodes ofseason 2and episode 8 ofseason 3.Inseason 4,he was a guest panelist in episodes 3 and 4, on his first appearance performingRobin Thicke's "Blurred Lines"as the" Robin "(wearing a cut-out face of Robin Thicke). He went on to be a guest panelist in the third episode ofseason 5and episode 7 ofseason 6.He was absent inseason 7.He later served as a guest panelist alongside the lateLeslie Jordanon episode 7 ofseason 8.
Personal life
[edit]McHale married Sarah Williams in July 1996. They have 2 sons. They currently live inStudio Cityafter having lived inLos Feliz.[40][41][42][43]In a 2018 interview onDax Shepard's podcastArmchair Expert,McHale revealed he wasdyslexic,having discovered this when his two sons were diagnosed.[44]
Politics and beliefs
[edit]He attends aPresbyterian church[45]and has been supportive of theLGBT community.While performing at theDurham Performing Arts Centerin North Carolina, he wore a handmadegay-rightsshirt, talked about thebathroom lawpassed weeks prior, and said he was donating all proceeds to the LGBTQ Center of Durham and would not perform in the state again until the law was overturned.[46][47][48][49]McHale, along with several of hisCommunitycastmates, made a campaign video in support of Joe Biden in October 2020 titled "Human Beings for Biden."[50]
Philanthropy
