John Coakley

John Coakley(bornClaremorris,County Mayo)[1]is an Irish political scientist. He is emeritus professor in the School of Politics & International Relations atUniversity College Dublin,where he was formerly director of theInstitute of British-Irish Studies.[2][3]He also holds the title of Distinguished International Professor atQueen's University Belfast.[4]

Coakley graduated with a BA in History and Politics from University College Dublin in 1972, and also holds an MA in Politics from UCD, awarded in 1974. In 2002, he was madeDoctor of Lettersin Politics by theNational University of Ireland.[1]He specialises in the study ofIrish politics,comparative politicsandethnic conflict.

He was vice president of theInternational Social Science Councilbetween 2002 and 2006, and was Secretary General of theInternational Political Science Associationfrom 1994 until 2000.[3][5]He was a fellow at theWilson Centerfrom 2005 until 2006.[1]

In July 2023, Coakley was the recipient of the International Political Science Association'sKarl Deutsch Award,which recognises a prominent scholar engaged in cross-disciplinary research.[6]
